Tests

  1. DNA-based blood test to help detect CF (looks at gene known to cause disease).
  2. Sweat chloride test (high salt level in sweat indicates disease).
  3. Fecal fat test (meaures the percent of unabsorbed fat).
  4. Upper GI and small bowel series (patient swallows barium and x-rays are taken of the digestive system).
  5. Measurement of pancreatic functions.

Tests During Pregnancy:
Amniocentasis- A sample of the amniotic fluid is taken and tested.
Chorionic Villus Sampling- A biopsy (sample of tissue) is taken from the placenta.

Because defective gene responsible for cystic fibrosis is now found to be in the middle of chromosome 7, it is now possible to develop screening test that identifies the carriers of CF gene.
